Every month South Side Derby Dolls votes for our Member of the Month.

Member of the Month honours our volunteers for their hard work, commitment and general awesomeness.

Our January 2017 Member of the Month was Hypes!

What’s your Derby name and number?

Hypes 217

What is the inspiration and story behind your derby name and number?

When I started with South Side, Lenny dubbed me Hypercoloured Sluttypants because I always had tiny pants on and a bright shirt. I’m known to not wear much clothing. My number is 217, which is the police radio code for “harm with intent to murder” – it’s also Liz upside down and back the front but I didn’t get that pointed out to me until much later… That was not intentional.

What 3 words describe roller derby to you?

Family, fun, strong.

How did you get involved with roller derby?

I’ve always wanted to do it. One year I brought my first set of quads (R3’s) and waited until I could find a league near me that was having an intake. 12 months later I was in fresh meat with Western Sydney Rollers.

What is your pre-derby sports or skating background?

As a kid I was always out in the street on my roller blades, bike or skate board. My two older brothers where really into skate boarding and my next door neighbours growing up had two ramps they use to keep in there drive way for us to use whenever we wanted.

What’s your favourite thing about S2D2?

Being Happiness Commissioner is the best thing I’ve ever done. I love that South Side is a highly based family orientated league. Becoming a part of this league was the best choice I have ever made. South Side fits well with my values of inclusion and love. Skating is super fun, skating with a smile on your face, high fives on the bench and puppy dogs at games is even better!

Favourite Star Wars character or quote?

Yoda saying “don’t fall asleep” in the Star Wars lip syncing YouTube video. So good.

What do you think about when you’re lacing up your skates?

I’ve got this.

Do you have a pre-bout

Music. I have a derby playlist that I always blast and sing/scream along to on my way to games.

Do you have a theme song?

I have a few inspirational quotes. “Who I was yesterday is not who I am today” “We will bend but never break” – Hickey surname moto (Irish) “Explore, challenge, understand, transform”

Do you have a derby hero?

Stephanie Maloney *drools*

How has your involvement with roller derby affected the way you live the rest of your life?

Oh wow. Where do I begin? I have had the wonderful opportunity to be involved with some of the most intelligent, strong, athletic, determined men and women I have ever met. I have formed some life long relationships through roller derby that I will never forget. Even if I don’t speak to some of those people as much as I use to or not at all anymore, they still hold a solid chunk of my heart. I would not be where I am today without the amazing support of the people within roller derby. Roller Derby saved my life, massive props to South Side for saving it once again.

What is your signature move?

Throwing my butt into people who try to move around the outside line.

Thanks Hypes!
