Every month South Side Derby Dolls votes for our Member of the Month.

Member of the Month honours our volunteers for their hard work, commitment and general awesomeness.

Our June 2015 Member of the Month was Cherry Ripper!

Sorry folks, looks like we got a little behind on our Member of the Month posts with all the amazing derby happening over the last couple of months! Our June Member of the Month was our media mastermind Cherry Ripper! Always working tirelessly behind the scenes making us look good online and in print, Cherry was the organizing force behind our awesome booth at Supanova this year! From getting us all organized, to being there to set-up the booth and then pack it back down, we couldn’t have had such a great Supanova weekend without all of her hard work!

What 3 words describe roller derby to you?

How did you get involved with roller derby?
I used to go watch a friend play at the SRDL games at the Hordern and Sydney Olympic Park (Go Team Unicorn!).  But it took me a long time (and a couple of 9 month injuries) before I had the right time to commit to derby. In that time a new league had formed locally, S2D2, so it was fate!

What is your pre-derby sports/skating background?
Aside from enforced netball and school sport, none. Sports and me don’t really mix. I used to roller-skate a bit as a kid, but never anything serious. I was mostly in it for the Nerds.

What’s your Derby name and Number?
Cherry Ripper 319

What is the inspiration and story behind your derby name and number?
My name came up due to a bunch of things — my favourite chocolate bar and turning a particular shade of red when I’m skating and concentrating led to the ‘Cherry’ part.
The Ripper part let me get in a sneaky history reference and more importantly a subtle Buffy the Vampire Slayer reference (Giles FTW!).

319 is a combination of my daughters’ birthdays, so they’re always with me when I skate.

What’s your best derby moment?
I’m still on a pretty steep learning curve with my skating, so I love it when I nail a skill that I’ve been focusing on. But I did really enjoy being asked to be a scoregirl at our Tri-Wizard tournament earlier this year. It’s a completely redundant job now with the projectors and the shorter line up times. But it was still fun to be a part of!

Favourite Star Wars quote?
“Do or do not, there is no try” – Yoda

What’s your favourite thing about S2D2?
I love that everyone brings the best parts of themselves to the league to help it grow. Everything is volunteer-based and run, so I’m constantly amazed at the quality and quantity of things that we do! We have professional teachers who give up their weekends to trainers and nurses who readily volunteer to be first aiders. It’s amazing to me how generous everyone is with their time and skills.
Thanks Cherry!
