Cheese-a-maniac may only be a recent addition to S2D2, but she’s already become a valuable member of the league. Currently a Droid in training, Cheese has also been lending her creative mojo to our Merch and Media committees, coming up with new ways for our members to show and wear their purple and teal pride! You can check out Cheese’s amazing handiwork on this years 5×5 Championship posters, created in collaboration with Thundrbutt, another awesome S2D2 member!

What was the inspiration behind the 5×5 artwork?
The Big Kahuna was the brains behind the operation. He was inspired by other sports and athletic artwork out there that had used similar effects. We wanted something that would stand out and that would be like nothing else ever done in the derby community. I think we’ve managed to achieve this while also showing how athletic and amazing the skaters are.

What 3 words describe roller derby to you?
Crazy, fun, evolving.

How did you get involved with roller derby?
I went to a Sydney Roller Derby League game back when they were still at Olympic Park and knew straight away that this was something I had to get into! I got skates and gear for my birthday and started going to Rollerfit classes, which taught me how to skate. At the end of 2012 I joined a league and got to play my first game in the 2013 5×5 Tournament! Since then I’ve been involved in lots of exciting things like TGSS, Rollercon and ERRD. I’ve now made the move over to officiating where I’m training to be a referee, and in May I’ll be attending my first ever ref clinic!

What is your pre-derby sports/ skating background?
I used to roller skate as a kid during the school holidays or at friend’s parties. I even had a pair of Ninja Turtle strap-on skates!
Just before getting into derby, I was learning to ice skate and had even started ice hockey lessons. I still occasionally ice skate but I feel more at home on a nice wooden floor :)

What’s your Derby name and Number?
Cheese-a-maniac 1984

What is the inspiration and story behind your derby name and number?
I’m a big fan of cheese, it’s a big part of my life. I’m also an 80’s baby and I like a good pun, so Cheese-a-maniac seemed like a good fit.

My number is the year I was born in and also a reference to the novel Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell. I find stories about dystopian societies fascinating and I love any imagery that has abandoned buildings in it.

What’s your best derby moment?
Hmmm… that’s a tough one! During a game at ERRD in 2013, it was just myself and the jammer up against 5 opponents but I managed to hold the opposing jammer back long enough for our jammer to get lead. It made me realise that I’m strong and I can make a difference on the track!

Do you have a pre-skating or pre-bout ritual?
Nervous pee.

What do you think about when you’re lacing up your skates?
Why did I buy Antiks? I love them but it takes me about 2 hours to lace them up! Solution: Velcro Antiks.

Do you have a theme song or a favourite inspirational quote?
I guess it’s ‘She’s a Maniac!’

What is your signature move?
The Cheese-roll. This is my go-to move when taking a hit. Get low, and roll, roll, roll!

Do you have a derby hero?
So many derby heroes, so little time! But one skater who has probably inspired me the most is Carmen Getsome. I’ve been lucky enough to meet her 3 times! She’s super nice, smart and strong.

How has your involvement with roller derby affected the way you live the rest of your life?
I can’t, I have derby.

Favourite Star Wars character/quote/ movie?
Umm…. so this is awkward…I’m not actually a Star Wars fan. There, I said it! But I thought Darth Maul was kinda cool until he got chopped in half…

What’s your favourite thing about S2D2?
I love how friendly and accepting everyone is! I was welcomed and felt part of the league from my very first training session. There is no bad juju here, just purple, teal and puppies!

Thanks Cheese!
