Round 3 of 5×5 took place on Saturday 18th of May at Sydney Boys High as Inner West played host to a season changing double header.

Bout 1 – Central Coast vs Blue Mountains
1

The first bout of the had punters salivating at the prospect of two undefeated, top of the table teams Central Coast and Blue Mountains going head to head to see who would remain at the top of the heap and solidify their spot for the Grand Final in August.  With both teams racking up huge scores in the opening two rounds of play, Round 3 was sure to be a scoring bonanza with both teams stacked with potent attack in the form of fast, point producing machines in both teams jammer rotations.

The results on the night didn’t quite match expectations with the Valkyries from the Coast running away with a convincing win continuing their unbeaten run.  CCRG with their jammer spine of Teenie Flirtini (109 pnts), Hazy Demon (102), and Hannabelle Dekt’her (53) ran rampant over a Blue Mountains team that did not look at all like the fast, high endurance, attacking Free Sisters we had grown accustomed to so far this season. On the contrary, BMRDL’s key jammers were stifled often in the first half with CCRG’s strong packs frustrating the Free Sisters attack and limiting their scoring opportunities, forcing penalties on the BMRDL jammers as evidenced by the unusual sight of none of the BMRDL jammers cracking the 50 point barrier (Rapid Dash 42, Ra-Punksal 36).  Central Coast enjoyed the freedom their jammers were afforded by a lopsided power jam count, seemingly piling on the points at will and went into oranges with a comfortable but not insurmountable 73 point lead; 127 -54.

Blue Mountains would need something special in the second to turn their fortunes around but Central Coast applied even more pressure coming out of the break even stronger than the first, keeping the Free Sisters to only 5 points in the first 7 jams to begin the half.  Midway through the 2nd, BMRDL put together a string of strong jams closing the gap ever so slightly, but ultimately it proved to be too little too late as the Valkyries secured their undefeated record and sole spot atop the table with an impressive 288-107 win. Allure N Kill for CCRG and Blood Red Penny stood out in MVP performances as voted by the opposition.

Central Coast play their last game of the regular season against Inner West in Round 4 and Blue Mountains will be able to use their Round 4 BYE to refocus for a must win Round 5 at home.

Bout 2 – Inner West vs South Side
2

In the second bout of the evening, home team Inner West took on cross town rivals and sister league South Side.  South Side’s The Force boasted a far more experienced lineup and a desire for redemption after their round 1 loss and really took it to the less experienced girls of Inner West’s Bullet Proof West.  As in the first game of the evening, power jams proved to be a deciding factor in the result as S2D2 were able to pile on the points with huge power jams throughout the bout seeing their jammers notching up some big points for the jammer points leader board  (Fairy Bled 140, PorFavor 134, Agrodite 57).  Inner West’s ranks were bolstered in this round with several debutante skaters including recent transfer from Western Sydney, Vanity Bonfire, who lead Inner West’s scorers with 46.  Fellow debutante Mini Meat’s opportunity to make an impact was cut short as she was ejected in only her third jam for gross misconduct on her entry to the penalty box.

The rest of the night saw S2D2 put on a clinic that will undoubtedly be a learning experience for the young up and comers from Inner West who, despite the vast difference on the scoreboard, had a lot of fun and ended the bout with smiles on all faces.  The result of said clinic was the biggest point differential in the 5×5 so far with S2D2 dominating IWRDL 403-74.  The bout was Marie Furie’s last for Inner West before she heads back to the UK.

Inner West roll into Round 4 with another tough bout against competition front runners Central Coast and S2D2 coming off their dominant performance in Round 3 will be filled with confidence as they take on Haweksbury/Hills Area at home.
