Every month South Side Derby Dolls votes for our Member of the Month.

Member of the Month honours our volunteers for their hard work, commitment and general awesomeness.

Our December 2016 Member of the Month was Undead Redhead!

What’s your Derby name and Number?

Undead Redhead

What 3 words describe roller derby to you?

Perseverance, acceptance, happiness.

How did you get involved with roller derby?

A character in a book played roller derby and I had no idea what it was so I googled it and then found out about South Side from a bumper sticker. The rest is history!

What is your pre-derby sports or skating background?

Tennis, water polo, and for most of primary school I did squad swimming

What’s your best derby moment?

I haven’t had one specific great moment but instead a lot of moments that have made me feel really proud about how far I’ve come since starting in 2014

What’s your favourite thing about S2D2?

We’ve all got each other’s backs, and we’re a community that cares about each other. No one is above anyone else, whether they’ve been skating for years or have been a freshie for a week

What do you think about when you’re lacing up your skates?

“Oh my god, why am I always last to finish putting my gear on?”

Do you have a pre-skating/pre-bout/pre-reffing ritual?

Singing along to Gaga in my car to get out nervous energy

Do you have a theme song or a favourite inspirational quote?

Rebel Rebel – David Bowie

Favourite Star Wars character or quote?

My favourite character is Rey because she inspires me to believe in myself and my skills even when I think I can’t do something. My favourite quote is, “Someone has to save our skins. Into the garbage chute, fly boy.” – Princess Leia

How has your involvement with roller derby affected the way you live the rest of your life?

Derby has made me appreciate my body so much more no only for how it looks but also for what it can do. Derby has also given me a big network of pals who make me feel right at home

Thanks Red!
