Dec 2016 06

Every month South Side Derby Dolls votes for our Member of the Month.

Member of the Month honours our volunteers for their hard work, commitment and general awesomeness.

Our November 2016 Member of the Month was THUNDRBUTT!

From zero to hero, Butts has been smashing it this year as a newly minted member of The Empire! A talented double threat on the track, her dance warm-ups are the not to be missed! When she’s not on skates, she lends us her mad skills as a designer and media whiz. Thanks for sharing your creative genius and always stepping up for your team Butts!

What’s your Derby name and Number?

What is the inspiration and story behind your derby name and number?

It’s a combination between my gamertag (hidemythundr) and well.. my butt. I figured if I took control of something I was self conscious about then I could learn to celebrate it. It’s certainly paid off! I’m usually known as Butts now.

61 is the year my mum was born – She’s not around to cheer from the sidelines (and possibly shake her head at me playing a full contact sport) but wearing the number feels like she’s around :)

What 3 words describe roller derby to you?

Inclusive. Supportive. Home.

How did you get involved with roller derby?

I googled “sports that require no previous experience” when I couldn’t find a local lower grade basketball team to join. I spent my tax return on a pair of second hand Bonts and three years later here we are!

What is your pre-derby sports or skating background?

Skating was very much a learned skill for me even though I skated a bit as a kid. In high school I played a lot of hockey, netball and basketball.

What’s your best derby moment?

Oh, there are just so many. Years of high-fives, hugs and smiles in the derby community. Playing my first bout at ERRD this year with some of the most amazing women I’ve ever met.

Last weekend my best friend (MelScream) and I were playing on the same team. I was jamming coming around on my scoring pass, Mel was coming out of the penalty box and skated up behind me. She was about to tell me that she was going help me out with some offence, but we clipped skates and both went flying. Only in derby can your bestie trip you over and you just laugh and hug it out.

What’s your favourite thing about S2D2?

The family vibe, the feeling that when I’m at training I feel like I’m home, the silly dancing warm ups, the after training sushi. I’m so incredibly proud to be part of this league.

Do you have a pre-bout ritual?

A really healthy breakfast, lots of hydrating and fun, energetic dance warm-ups. Something that makes me smile and shake off the nerves.

Do you have a theme song or a favourite inspirational quote?

If I came with background music my song would be Baby Got Back.

My inspirational quote is “Life is only as good as your mindset” which is pretty relevant when playing derby.

Favourite Star Wars character or movie?

“Aren’t you a little short for a storm trooper?” Oh Leia. So sassy.

Do you have a derby hero?

I love Freight Train from Texas. She doesn’t look for gaps, she creates them. She’s equally impressive as a Jammer/Blocker/Pivot, which is what I aim to be (one day!). Her athleticism and strength is just so inspiring.

How has your involvement with roller derby affected the way you live the rest of your life?

So much. It’s made me more patient, it’s taught me when to take control and when to let others take control. It’s shown me my strengths and weaknesses. Above all it’s taught me to love myself (flaws included).

Thanks Butts!
