Every month South Side Derby Dolls votes for our Member of the Month.

Member of the Month honours our volunteers for their hard work, commitment and general awesomeness.

Our February 2016 Member of the Month was Machette Nettie!

You can’t keep Nettie away from training and South Side events, even while injured! Always a smiling, positive presence at training, she’s always willing to lend some encouragement to her league mates and travel all over to cheer with the Rebel Alliance! Thanks Nettie, we can’t wait to see you back on the track!

What 3 words describe roller derby to you?

Fitness, Giggles and Challenging

How did you get involved with roller derby?

I saw a game overseas many years ago and was going to join, but didn’t because I was coming back to Australia. Then I saw the awesome S2D2 girls at Supanova and thought… Yes! I’m doing so doing this!

What is your pre-derby sports or skating background?

I didn’t do many team sports growing up, mostly individual sports such as swimming and Kung Fu. Previously, it’s just been my other love of scuba diving .
I did roller skate when I was little (when we actually had local roller rinks to go to). My younger sister and I use to watch Xanadu and at the same time, we put our skates on and skate around the house like mad. Until my sister used my dad’s foot as a break and he ended up in hospital. Then one day…we couldn’t find our skates (nor the Xanadu video). :-(

What’s your Derby name and Number?

Machete Nettie – 934

What is the inspiration and story behind your derby name and number?

I love thinking up derby names and have helped a few others with suggestions.

It was hard to come up with a final derby name. I had so many written down and still do like them. However, I had to use my own nickname in my derby name, otherwise I wouldn’t answer to something I’m not familiar with.  I’m sure the trainers would appreciate that. :-)

I’m also a Harry Potter fan and the 934 comes from Platform 9 and 3 quarters.

What’s your best derby moment?

Would be going to my first Derby Fest in QLD this year with some amazing S2D2 family. I was lucky enough to be in training sessions by Snot Rocket, Rogue Runner and Shaina Serelson – I would recommend this to anyone. You learn so much and make new friends.

Do you have a pre-bout ritual?

I have not started bouting yet. But when I do, I’m sure it will be something very odd! (stay tuned)

Do you have a theme song or a favourite inspirational quote?

“It never gets easier, you just get better.”

Favourite Star Wars character or movie?

Ok I’ll say it… I LOVE WICKET!

What’s your favourite thing about S2D2?

I still find it amazing that everyone helps each other out and encourages each other. S2D2 love to bring out the best in you and they don’t give up. Watching the team play at games are an inspiration and you are confident that you are being trained by such passionate and amazing people.  Southside – Strongside (woot!)

Thanks Nettie!
